Race Types
FairWinds supports multiple race formats to suit different sailing styles and skill levels.
Open Races
Open races are available to all users. These races typically feature:

- Scheduled start times

Private Races
Create custom races for your friends or sailing club:
- Invite-only participation
- Custom course design

Race Series
Multi-race competitions where points accumulate across events:

Race Lifecycle
1. Registration Phase
- Browse available races
- View course details and weather forecasts
- Join the race
- Begins when race is announced
2. Planning Phase
- Set your route using waypoints
- Use routing tools to optimize
- Adjust strategy based on weather
- Ends at race start time
3. Racing Phase
- Boats follow planned routes
- Real-time position updates
- Live leaderboard
- Weather updates continue
4. Finish
- Boats cross finish line
- Final positions calculated
- Results published
- Points awarded (for series)
Course Design
Waypoints
Races are defined by a series of waypoints:
- Start Line - Where the race begins
- Marks - Intermediate waypoints to round
- Finish Line - Where the race ends
Rounding Rules
- Pass marks on the correct side
- Penalties for incorrect rounding
- Distance to mark matters
Boat Classes
Different races may use different boat types:

Scoring
Time-based Scoring
Most races use elapsed time:
- First to finish wins
- Corrected time may apply for handicap races
- Penalties add time
Points-based Series
For race series:
- 1st place: 1 point
- 2nd place: 2 points
- 3rd place: 3 points
- etc.
Lowest total points wins the series.
